Desktops & Wi-Fi

A couple of weeks a friend was telling me about a problem with her home computer. She said that she had internet access through her cable company and she has been connecting to the internet with a laptop for the last couple of years without incident. Recently she got a new desktop computer and started running into problems.

She has not been able to get the desktop to connect to the internet. After reaching out to cable company, she was told a tech would have to come out at a rate of $150+ per hour to get to the root of the problem. She decided to hold off on that to see if there was…

Hulu Plus Equals Disappointment

I started watching Hulu.com in the fall of 2007. Prior to finding Hulu.com, I had a Cable TV subscription, a DVR, and a bit of a love/hate relationship going with Netflix. A little less than three years have gone by and I still find myself still watching Hulu.com and Netflix, but have dropped the DVR and most of the Cable TV subscription package.

Over the course of this year I have read various reports about the Hulu paid-subscription service, now called Hulu Plus. Upon first hearing about…

My First Attempt at Growing Hops

In February, I went to Modern Homebrew Emporium in Cambridge, MA and placed my order for hops rhizomes. Figuring that this would be a muti-year effort, I decided to start by ordering one each of Cascade, Fuggle, and Goldings rhizomes and see how things went. The hops rhizomes arrived in late March. I had grand plans for how I would go about planting my rhizomes, but regrettably April found me down with a leg injury for a few weeks.

Saison Homebrew Recipe

A few months ago I found a couple of good looking beer recipes at HomeBrew.com. The first one I chose to try was a Milk Stout recipe. When brewing it, I had an issue with the White Labs yeast that I had used. It basically failed to activate. I had to make an emergency substitution with a couple of packets of Safbrew S33. This was the only other yeast that I had in my house at the time. The Safbrew S33 did the job and the Milk Stout turnecd out pretty good.

Today I am trying out a Homebrew.com Saison Recipe. The recipe is called “Bridget’s Love Potion Saison” and here is my attempt at it:

MLB.tv & Blackouts

One of the serious drawbacks of no longer being a cable tv subscriber is that I cannot watch local sports. For the most part, it is the lack of baseball that gets to me. It seems like it was only a few years ago that baseball games were broadcast locally. Those days are definitely gone. Most of the Red Sox games are now only broadcast on the cable channel NESN. This means I cannot watch Red Sox games.

To Cable TV or Not to Cable TV

Last week I called Comcast and requested that they downgrade my cable television service from the Digital Classic package to broadcast channels only. This is a rather fun conversation to have with the Comcast folks. Their procedure seems to require that they escalate the call at least twice to give a couple of supervisors a chance to talk the caller out of this decision.

Apathy & Support

Recently I found myself thinking about the ‘Apathy’ Demotivator.

There is a software that I use to convert video so that it is podcast friendly. The software had an update available for download. To get the update I had to login to the product’s support site via a login form (choose product from drop down list, enter email address and registration code from my purchase email.)

Email Pet Peeve

A decent portion of the email that I receive is definitely spam, but there are some fringe candidates in my Inbox as well. Often these borderline emails are sent from folks that are legitimately trying to market something to me. As there are email marketing companies out there that are actually concerned about the quantity of spam-flagged emails that are sent from their clients, I always look for an opt-out option before reaching for the spam button.
